Loi Krathong Sai 1,000 Floating Lanterns Royal Trophy 2016
12-17 November 2016
On the banks of the Ping River, Rattanakosin 200 years Bridge, Tak Province
A tranquil oasis off the mainstream tourist track, Tak province looks forward to welcoming visitors with warm Thai hospitality and a unique culture like no other this November.
Known as Thailand’s western frontier to Myanmar and gateway to the Northern provinces, Tak is home to the unique ‘Loi Krathong Sai’ floating lantern festival. A source of pride for the province, the illuminating night time celebration marks the full moon on the 12th month in the Thai traditional calendar. Held on the Ping River, the festival represents the area’s unique cultural heritage, and local wisdom passed down from generation to generation.
Unlike anywhere else in Thailand, Tak’s Loi Krathong Sai 1,000 Floating Lanterns festival kicks off with Krathong Sai Parade, where local residents dress up in Thai traditional costumes to celebrate the grand lantern procession, which is presided over by 10 Royal Krathongs to commemorate and to mark the beginning of the festivities along the Ping River.
Ms. Thamonwan Ruangkachorn, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Tak Office reveals that, “TAT Tak Office along with local municipalities and communities will welcome visitors with the Loi Krathong Sai Lai Prathip Pan Duang, the unique custom of threading coconut shell Krathongs together and floating them in a candlelit chain down the Ping River to honour Bhudda and to ask for forgiveness, and thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha. As a winner of the Thailand Tourism Awards 2011, 2013, and 2015, the string illumination of Loi Krathong Sai Lai Prathip Pan Duang in November is an event all cultural travellers should experience at least once in their lifetime.”
